The animations are pretty basic but they are what you would expect from an actual pinball machine. All of these are played out on the video screen. Those are the two basic premises of the machine, but there are many, many more random scenarios such as stunt driving, police chases, cash prizes and I seem to remember a mini-game based around the Super Sheep from the Worms games. When this starts you need to hit, flip and send the ball flying round the bends, varying ones affect the travelling speed of the taxi and how many miles left till you arrive at the next city. The other main object is to travel around the USA, shooting the ball into the tunnel under the police car will start a random challenge, one of the challenges leads you to other cities. Slamming the ball into the taxi at the top right will add a passenger to the queue, I’m not certain how this is balanced as sometimes you can rack up several and other times it doesn’t add anything, what you then need to do is collect the passengers by using the little flipper at the top to send the ball around the back and into the taxi door. There are so many things the machine can do that I haven’t yet experienced them all, but I understand the basics.

The basic premise behind the game is extremely robust, you are a taxi driver and have to perform related tasks in order to earn points and cash. The sound effects are also brilliant, they sound very clear and there’s a surprising amount of voice-acting involved. This was the best, clear screenshot I could get of it so you’ll have to take my word for it that when you’re actually playing it’s a lot sharper and if you look closely you can even seen little scratches and imperfections on the balls surface. The pinball itself does a great job of mirroring the surrounding area, I’m not sure if it is an actual reflection (though it probably isn’t) but it adds a lot to the feel of the game.
With the exception of the video screen at the top and possibly the flippers this could easily be an actual pinball machine. Here is the basic machine ( apologies for the FRAPS FPS counter, it gets stuck on the screen with some older games):Īs you can see the visuals are amazing, especially when you think that this is an eleven year old game, that’s not to mention the stunning art style.

Big Race USA is full of these details, extrovert enough to grab your interest but with a solid base that doesn’t overwhelm. The general mechanics of pinball don’t matter to me, what I enjoy are the interesting details of the machines themselves, the way things interact and the clever actions that provide you with points. I’m not a fan of pinball games, I don’t remember ever playing a real pinball machine and the only other pinball game that I have enjoyed is the one included with some versions of Windows.

One of the demos I remember fondly is Pro Pinball – Big Race USA and on a recent replay still found it a lot of fun, so I bought it. I’ll see an old game going for a couple of pounds, remember back to when I played the demo and quite often end up buying it.

I have many fond memories og playing the vast array of demos that came every month with my copy of PC Gamer, I think I played practically every one, it was a great source of free gaming and allowed me to make educated choices about which I ultimately bought and their influence still affects my purchases today. So I picked up two more titles (and considered several others) that I had been thinking of ordering for a while, the first was Haegemonia: Legions of Iron (more on that soon) and the second was Pro Pinball – Big Race USA.ĭemos aren’t as prevalent as they once were, going back maybe five to ten years we were flooded with them. My bank charges me a flat fee of £1 for oversees transactions, this is the main reason I don’t order from GOG and Impulse more often, on larger purchases the cost is spread out evenly amongst the games but £1 can make a large difference to what would otherwise be a nice cheap deal.

PoP was a game I wanted to buy and although I have a retail version of BG&E the fact that GOG have some sort of access to the inner workings of the games, allowing them to make them work with modern OSs, plus the usual digital distribution benefits (off-site back-up, free to download and GOGs no DRM policy) meant that I wouldn’t be losing out. Beyond Good & Evil + Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for $9.99 (a little over £6). I hadn’t bought anything from GOG (Good Old Games) since I was in the trial, but this weekends promo interested me.
